Please help! Win XP Pro: "The System cannot find the file specified".

Here is the problem:

1. I used to have Win XP Home Edition.
A while ago I had a power outage, after which the system refused to
work with my CNet PRO200 WL PCI Fast Ethernet Adaptor. It could
recognize it as new hardware, but it could not install the driver to
it, giving the error message "The System could not find the file
specified". It would not tell what file it was looking for. The
system file that appeared in the Properties of the device seemed to be
there.

I was able to recover the system from a previous date, and the error
was gone.

2. Several days ago I've upgraded to Win XP Pro and run into the same
error. Now I cannot recover from a previous date, because I cannot go
back to Win XP Home edition. Or can I?

The system would not allow me to deinstall the driver, giving me the
message that it is need to boot up. Same message form the Safe Mode.

I tried to work with registry settings. I manually deleted all
references to my adapter from the registry, restarted and got the same
error.

I tried to replace the network adapter, bought a new one, tried to
install it and got the same message.

I am out of ideas.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you very much.

Not really. This is a newsgroup for discussing X Window intrinsics.

I don't think that Windows XP supports that; it does not come with
either X clients or servers.

Perhaps you should post your question on a newsgroup somehow related
to Microsoft's products instead.

Wrong newsgroup, although I'm not sure there's a heck of a lot of
activity on the X Windows System Intrinsics (used by, among
other things, Motif, but not used by either Qt/KDE or Gtk/Gnome).

Try a Microsoft-specific group, and good luck; sounds like a nasty one. :-/
